Many are often neglected and vulnerable in society. Conditions include major depression, bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, and a host of other conditions. Depending on the severity of their disorder, some of these clients are high functioning and others need to be in protected group home settings. Some of these conditions make them vulnerable to physical abuse, financial abuse, and emotional abuse. They also have a high risk of being homeless. This population needs human services that include case management, intervention strategies, help with emotional regulation, and more. This population also needs help with meeting their basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. Over the past 10 years, this population has expanded, and a lot of these clients have dual diagnoses such as mental health disorders and substance abuse additions. When people suffer from dual diagnosis, they have two major life events that interfere with them living normal life’s. When I was a mental health case manager for a local organization, I had a caseload of 30 clients. More than half of those clients had a dual diagnosis that included substance abuse. Most of these substance abuse additions were additions to pills. This complicated servicing them, because the medicine they needed they often abused it and physicians would not give them refills because they knew there were not taking their medicine as prescribed. Many new health providers have medical personnel or home health aides that go to the client’s homes to help them monitor their medicine, by keeping counts. I believe over the next 10 years substance abuse and homelessness for the mentally ill will become more of a crisis. We can see now that many persons struggling with mental illness are living in our cities in tents and under bridges. I believe this is a crisis that our government and local communities must solve. According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, people can not meet higher needs until their basic needs are met. As a human service practitioner, I would focus on three of the most basic needs of the mentally ill, food, clothing, and housing. I believe that when people have their basic needs met, it frees them up to work on themselves. If a person is struggling for food, they can not focus on improving their mental wellness.Reference: Martin, M. E. Pearson.2) Vulnerable Population – Homeless In the world we live in, there are different types of individuals, there are the rich, poor, and homeless. Individuals are homeless due to no fault of their own, or they faced with decisions that lead them to live in conditions that are unsafe and sometimes depressing. Many Americans are faced with being homeless without a stable home, money, food, or employment. To many, this population is considered to be a vulnerable population due to factors of health conditions. Unable to receive the proper care for different medical conditions, homeless individuals are more prone to having medical conditions, and diseases that could result in health ( Martin, M.E.(2018) Human services professionals should first establish informed consent, limits of confidentiality, privileged communication, and authorization to release information when talking to a person who is homeless (client). This allows the human service professional and the client to establish rules and understanding of what services provided. A human service professional is to determine what is expected from the client and a time frame of how long the process lasts. An agreement that will allow the social service professional to review the purpose, goals, and nature of what is provided through their service. Over the past ten years, there has been a program established to help individuals who are homeless. The Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing(HEARTH) Act was proposed to help individuals who are homeless to transition from the stress to a stable home. Human services professional goal is to help those who are in need to improve their overall ability to do better. In ten more years, these needs may change in ways to improve the percentage of Americans who are homeless. More programs that would be offered to help with the epidemic (Moffat, C. t. (2011, Fall). After reviewing “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs” video, the way I would address the unmet needs of individuals that are homeless is to first assessment of their exact situation. I would ask of the reason being homeless, what factors contributed them to being homeless. I would also ask questions to determine their behavior patterns. I am allowing myself to come to a conclusion based on what is being said by the client. To know what to expect during the observation of the client. Determining if they have any involvement with family or friends. I would also determine what is any mental assistance is needed in order to help the needs of the client.Moffat, C. T.
