Homosexual Males Using Crystal Methamphetamine

This is done to get a clearer picture of the gamut of this humongous problem. The paper, in the end, proposes certain actions which are deemed authentically responsive to the real needs and context of homosexual sales using crystal methamphetamine. One dominant global problem that is wreaking havoc to the personal, social, and psychological lives of millions of people and posing a major legal, social and public health challenge to the modern world is the misuse/abuse of drugs (Nutt et al 2007). One of the more common substances that are being used is crystal methamphetamine. Crystal methamphetamine is also known as crystal meth, meth, and tina, Methamphetamine works by entering the brain and causes the release of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. The drug can be smoked, snorted, orally ingested, injected, or used rectally (Breaking the Grip, 2006). Though there is a global concern regarding the rising numbers of people who are into substance use/abuse, the focus of this paper will solely be on the intricate and complicated connection between the use of crystal methamphetamine and homosexual males. Why?The primordial reason behind this limitation is the fact that the use of crystal methamphetamine by homosexual males is a serious problem (Halkitis Parsons, 2002). It is claimed that approximately 10 to 20 per cent of gay men have used methamphetamine in the past six months, a rate at least ten times higher than the general population (Breaking the Grip, 2006. i). This claim gives further support to the numerous studies showing that the use of crystal methamphetamine among homosexual males is prevalent (Halkitis et al, 2001. Halkitis et al 2007. Kubicek et al, 2007. Purcell et al 2001). Likewise, this problem is poorly understood by many as there is this misconception that homosexual males are using methamphetamine solely for sex (Bruce et al, 2008). Though it is not denied that there is an ounce of truth in this perception but to remove it from the context, condition, and the lived lives of homosexual males who are into methamphetamine is already a possible misconstrued picture of the real story.
